I drive a car pool for the commute to my work. I drive a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan almost 100km each way 200km a day. Fuel costs are typically about $30 / day. This van currently has 115,000 km. All fuel/vehicle/maintenance costs are covered by my employer. Apparently it would be cheaper to buy a tesla Model S for the next 8 years. Lets break it down...

In eight years, if we are super duper lucky and only have to pay for fuel and oil changes. The van doesn't require expensive overhauls or outright replacement of other used $5000-$10000 vans. Then we will still pay $62,400 in gas and oil changes. Most likely in that 8 years if the van makes it to 500,000km it will need $10-$20k in repairs/overhauls, or we replace it with cheap used vans when things fail, then we will likely be paying the same $10k-$20k. Meaning, we are most likely about to spend $72,400-$82,400 for transportation in the next eight years.

The Tesla Model S now offers an unlimited mile, eight year warranty. So if we rack up 400,000km on it, we will only be paying about $11,000 in power/fuel and can pick up a $5000 discount if we buy it in B.C. Canada. The sticker price in Canada is $64,500. Meaning... We can buy the car and have a full warranty for the next 8 years for about $70,500!

Wat? This is terrific!

Run the numbers with a Prius, it's probably even cheaper.

Prius don't seat 7. And won't be covered for warranty over that time.

Only a kid is going to fit into the rumble seats in the Model S. The Frunk is a fun, but probably a badplace to put a friend unless your friend is a dead hooker. And I doubt a Prius will give you much trouble after the warranty expires, but you can buy a extended warranty and still come in tens of thousands under the MSRP of a base Tesla. I'm not saying don't get the Tesla (I'd buy one, P85+ with air suspension and glass roof please) but going purely by the numbers, it's not the cheapest ride out there.

You don't have to put gas in a Tesla.

I'm sure thats not going to be a comfortable for 5 or more people as the van.

van feels cramped with peoples knees being shoved into the seats in front of them. This will probably have more space for the first 5, and be very cramped for the last one or two. Seating six has happened just not very often.

The rear seats are for kids only. Unless two of your coworkers are little people, its not gonna work. Too bad, I like the idea.

You don't have to front Toyota an extra $45,000 in order to exchange gasoline for electricity, the cost of which can't be ignored.

Maybe so, but do you want to be known as the cool dude on the block who owns the Tesla, or just another emasculated Joe who traded in his already emasculating minivan for an even more emasculating Prius? If there's anyway to justify getting a Tesla to the wifey, I'd go for it.

I should clarify I'm not saying it's better to buy a Prius, just that you shouldn't need to justify a Tesla by how "cheap" it is because it isn't. And I live in California, where the Model S is a fairly common car.
